Levi van Veluw's 'Family' / by Anna Madeleine

A fascinating work by Levi van Veluw, in which the artist himself sits with his family at a table, all five family members as well as the surroundings completely covered by wooden blocks. In an intriguing and slightly haunting way, they move slowly and self-consciously, their movement appearing to be digital, and lacking any life or emotional connection a family usually entails. An interesting inverse effect: rather than using digital technology to create character, van Veluw uses real people stripped of their character to simulate the digital, to portray the emotional complexities of family relationships.
