Andreas Gefeller / by Anna Madeleine

Andreas Gefeller was a new discovery for me at Hasted Kraeutler Gallery, Chelsea. 'Japan Series' is a beautiful series of prints made of images drawn through space with powerlines, manipulated to look like zippers, intersections, cables or wires, and branches creeping across grids and walls. These prints are shown with some of Gefeller's earlier photography of deserted urban scenes seen from above to form synchronised lines and grids. He contrasts order and chaos - a strong sense of emptiness, while still capturing a trace of densely populated environments and their systems.
