Waste not / by Anna Madeleine

Waste Not, by Chinese artist Song Dong, is a fascinating installation made of the collection of hoarded possessions belonging to the artists' mother. Described as a collaboration between family members, personal stories resonate throughout the vast array of objects (which is common to his other work - mainly video installations), while simultaneously commenting on broader issues of social transformation in contemporary Chinese culture. For me it also spoke of the process of sorting, categorizing, and colour-coding this vast array of objects from what I imagine to be compacted chaos, into a beautifully ordered space. It also reminded me a lot of Benjamin Law, and the stories about his mother in The Family Law.

Images below found here, of the work installed at the MoMA in 2009. (I saw it today at the Yerba Buena Centre for the Arts in San Francisco.)
